What's this? Oh, a film review... I remember these.

Right then. Smokin' Aces starts with an FBI team, Agent Richard Messner (Ryan Reynolds) and Agent Donald Carruthers (Ray Liotta), observing the Mafia. Primo Sparazza (Joeseph Ruskin) wants the heart of a Las Vegas performer, Buddy 'Aces' Israel (Jeremy Piven) He's wiling to pay a million dollars to "the Swede" for the task. This isn't an exclusive contract however, and a lot of hitmen understandably show an interest.

Israel's background is then explained. This is partly done in a briefing to the FBI team by their boss, Stanley Locke (Andy Garcia), and partly from a bail bondsman Jack Dupree (Ben Affleck) briefing his two Ex-cop colleagues.

Israel is planning to become a protected witness, and knowing of the contract out on him the FBI team is sent to retrieve him. The Bondsmen are trying to extract Israel before the FBI team for a minor crime. Having some access to information on the underworld, he briefs his colleagues on the hitmen that might be interested.

The hitmen then. Well, that's not entirely accurate... but we'll get to that.

First, a pair of female killers for hire, Georgia Sykes (Alicia Keys) and Sharice Watters (Taraji P. Henson) are given the job by their Handler. Their methodology is one on infiltration, one on sniper support. Nice.

Next, the Tremors, Darwin (Chris Pine), Jeeves (Kevin Durand) and Lester (Maury Sterling). Three brothers with a distinctly unsuttle history. Their methodology is psychotically violent frontal assault.

Thirdly, Pasqual Acosta (Nestor Carbonell), a sadistic torturer aiming to infiltrate his way in.

Finally, Laslo Soot (Tommy Flanagan), a (stereotypical) master of disguise. His methods should be fairly obvious.

At this point, mayhem ensues.

Overall, its not a bad film. Its not exactly what was implied by the trailer, and the ending, well, its not really what I was expecting. Rating is a bit difficult. It feels somewhere between 4 and 5 for me. Looking back on it now, I'd quite like to see it again, which has made me bump it up to a 5.

This wasn't the film I was expecting from the trailer I was expecting something more lock stock or lucky number slevin. What we get is something a bit more serious and not as slick or as well put together. All the pieces are there but it doesn't really come together, it substitutes mayhem for carefully choreographed action. The twists are in one case very obvious in another fairly pointless and the ending is, well sudden.

Ryan Rennolds is reasonably good and in a more serious role than you usually see him.

I thought Jeremy Piven who played Buddy was good, his portrayal of a man whose world is going to pieces was very well thought out.

It's not a hideous film it has a good cast and some good action pieces I felt it could have been better though.
