I've switched over our pagination method to a more fancy version which does the whole pages and number thing. Something I've been meaning to do for a while but never had the time to go through and alter all the scripts.
Anyway I think it is all changed over and sorted out but there might be the odd dead link I've not spotted which I will fix as and when I find them.
I also picked up The Dark Knight in bluray which did look awesome on the my new telly, they seem to have left the Imax footage in full screen which is kinda neat.
Yesterday Byrn and myself took a trip to the cinema, probably the last of the year. We also then sat up till 6am to do the reviews. Hence the title, on the way back I was literally racing against the dawn which was rising behind me for most of the trip back.
Anyway we fitted in four films, an ice cream each, then one plate of ill advised nachos with chili somewhat reminiscent of the huge culinary ordeal we underwent in Vancouver, and to wrap it all up Byrn got his thumb nail polished to a high mirror shine by someone trying to flog some fancy sandpaper.
First up was Transporter 3 a film series that is the definition of formulaic. Still lots of stuff going on to amuse and intrigue.
Next we had the new Bond film Quantum of Solace. I find I can't manage a whole quantum of solace its too much pastry for my liking. A good film if slightly hampered by part 2 syndrome. You should see Casino Royale before you see this as it is a direct continuation, to the point you could splice them together and no one would notice the break.
After than we had Lakeview Terrace a fairly dark brooding film on the relationships between two neighbours. It was something I wasn't that keen on seeing due to trailer saturation but it was a good deal more subtle than I was expecting which mitigated that a touch.
Finally we had The Children a film we knew absolutely nothing about bar having seen the poster which suggest it was a horror film. It was indeed a horror film of the low budget independent variety. Coming to it with very little in the way of preconceptions was interesting and it did polarize opinions in the badger group.
So that's it for the year of films its had its high points and low points. As I sit here eating a Ginsters NewYork style steak and cheese pasty bought from the merco late last night, looking back it wasn't a bad year for films although that could be the pasty talking. Hopefully next year will bring some even better ones.
This evening I went to the local cinema which happens to have an Imax screen. They were showing The Dark Knight, given what we made of it at standard aspect ratio and film size I couldn't really turn down the opportunity to see it on a really big screen.
Most of the time Imax versions of hollywood releases are simply digitally resized versions of the original prints. In the case of The Dark Knight six of its scenes were actually shot using proper Imax cameras and "film" (I don't think they actually use film anymore). You could actually tell which scenes were Imax and which weren't because the normal scenes were still in widescreen where as the Imax scenes filled the entire screen.
I have to say it really did look good up there and it made a great film even better.
While I was there I also saw the trailer for the upcoming film of "The Watchmen" which looks great. I'm starting to get really excited about this film.
For a meal I had a phily cheesesteak sub which was good, it also came with chips. They offered me the option of cheese and bacon on my chips ... which sounded good. The reality was not so appealing the cheese was some sort of orange gunge and the bacon seemed to be the soya based bacon bits you get in salads. Let's just say I won't be taking that option again.
With any luck I will be flying home tomorrow but you never know with this lot.
As a recent spam said to me, I'm not sure what a "hot doog" is nor am I that clear about what 'reversal of fortune' implies in quotes.
Anyway I'm in orange county California (not to be confused with the orange county of orange county choppers which is on the other side of the country) again fixing stuff for various peoples.
On the flight out the APU (which I posit stands for Auxiliary Power Unit, it's a small jet engine in the tail) on the 747 failed, this meant the aircon didn't work and as a direct result we were an hour and half late taking off. It was also very hot. It cooled down once the plane got to altitude and the opened the engines all the way up.
I was fortunate enough to have the seat next to me free so I had some room.
While I was at the airport I got some new headphones, I got these bad boys they were still fairly pricey but that is what happens when I'm left alone in an airport with nothing to do and with access to my credit card. If you've never used noise cancelling headphones I would recommend checking them out next time you fly somewhere there are a variety of fairly good cheaper models available that work wonderfully on planes (where the amount of noise to filter out is pretty high). Wearing noise cancelling headphones is oddly like being under water, I don't know any other way of explaining it.
Most of the cheap ones i've bought (and usually broken fairly quickly usually by destroying the cable) have been good on planes but not really any use anywhere else. These fancy ones do actually work in normal use filtering out all the usual white noise of pc's and aircon stuff. All in all I was quite happy with them it cut out almost all the jet noise so I could enjoy my films in peace.
So onto the films I saw several, Kungfu panda which was quite fun, The Escapist which was a pretty good film about a prison escape, Redbelt a film about a ju jitsu master who lives a life of honour till a series of disasters forces him to fight competitively to pay off his debts it was not your typical fight film and is well worth checking out, then I watched Iron Man which was wonderful as usual, and finally ... about 3/4 of the bizarre speed racer I'd like to say I turned it off in disgust but the plane landing took care of that.
Anyway I've got a couple of days then I fly back home. Yet more films to enjoy.
Today we went to see a few films. Films of action, in descending order of merit. We definately saw them at the same time, but The Dark Knight was so full we were in different parts of the room...
New reviews are up for:
The Dark Knight
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
The Mummy - Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Now it is time to sleep.
That is all...
